Band Name
The Garrett Oswalt Band
Genre
Country

Garrett Oswalt comes from a small town in Mississippi. Garrett’s father used to play records of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and CCR all the time, and for the longest time, Garrett thought these were modern artists/bands. Garrett learned how to sing and play guitar from these albums. Garrett began playing live at the age of 18 and picked up a good following thanks to his approach to singing and playing classic country music while also having a modern sound. Garrett and his band have been playing for the past three years everywhere they can in Mississippi. Garrett won “2024 Best Mississippi Male Artist” at this year’s Mississippi Music Awards.

Band Members

Matt Brown- (Lead Guitarist) “The Twangmaster”- Matt has been with Garrett Oswalt since the beginning. Both enjoy the sound of classic honky tonk music and have done their best to keep older music modern for all generations of listeners. Matt grew up with a bluegrass background and has fingers fast as lightning on the fretboard. Matt’s love for classic country music means the audience will have a guitar picker who will not sound like a hard rocker dressed in Wranglers and Pearlsnaps but will have an authentic country sound throughout the show.

Cody Cox- (Drummer) “The Epitome of 90’s Country”- You will never find someone who studies the drums in a song more than Cody. Cody adds his own flavor to all of the songs we play and is always looking to improve. Cody not only plays the part, but he also looks the part of a 90’s country icon. With his trademark mullet and mustache, Cody is always ready for the party.

Billy Joe Fulgham-(Bass) “The Ladies Man” – What can we say, the ladies love Billy Joe. We don’t know if it’s because he has the countriest name in the band, or if women love a man with the slow hand. Either way, Billy Joe is a key factor to the band.

Favorite Song Composed/Performed

Can’t Have The Dog

I wrote this song almost 10 years ago. At the time, I was writing a song a day, but they were all coming out to be sad heartbreak songs. I was riding in the truck with a buddy of mine, and wrote the lyrics “Take my things and take your ring, and throw them out the window like you want to.” I told my buddy, who sighed and said “Please tell me you’re not going to write another depressing song again.” So I stopped writing the song and was trying to think happy thoughts. We pulled up shortly to my buddy’s house and his dog came running to the truck as happy as can be. I sat down next to the dog, and wrote this song in about 10 minutes. I really love playing the song live, because it has a happy chord progressing, but then the verse’s lyrics don’t really match up. Then the chorus hits and it all makes sense. People have told me they really want that song recorded, and that’s also a good feeling.

About three years ago, Matt, my guitarist, added an intro to the song that sounds awesome and takes the song to the next level in my opinion.

Most Embarrassing Thing To Happen at a Gig
Earlier this year, we had an outdoor show where the wind blew so hard it knocked our speakers off the stage in the middle of the performance. Thankfully, we bought great speakers, and no damage happened.
Where We're From
Eupora Mississippi- There really wasn't a lot of music happening in Eupora, but I will the people there have made sure my band plays there at least once a year. The people of Eupora are supportive of my band and that's a huge impact
Most Significant Thing to Happen to Us in Our Music
Opening for Them Dirty Roses was a fun experience. Being on the "Porch Talk" podcast helped more with my stage presence and interacting wit people as well

Our Greatest Influence
Classic Country- Waylon Jennings, 90's/Early 00's Country-Toby Keith, Modern- Jamey Johnson
Artist We'd Meet, Living or Dead

John Mayer- I feel like we could connect on a songwriter level. I have tried to venture out more with my songwriting, while still keeping a simple narrative that keeps people engaged. I feel like I have a lot I could learn from him, and also he seems down to earth and willing to help younger talent. Also, a jam session with John Mayer would be about the coolest thing ever.
